Despite rescheduling twice due to weather conditions, we were able to find the perfect afternoon at the beach and the pictures turned out so good. Those of you who know me, know that I’ve struggled with self image and self worth for as long as I can remember. I have been told that my tooth gap is the ugliest thing about me. I have been told that I am too loud. That I use weird words when I speak. That I am too tall. I have bad skin. I may be self confident in some ways but I have never considered myself beautiful.
When Evgeniia asked me if I wanted to do a photoshoot for her website I said yes immediately.
Because I wanted to help a friend build her portfolio. I warned her: I do not do well in front of a camera, I get awkward, I do not know how to pose. She sent me some Pinterest pictures of shots she wanted to do and I was intimidated. Sure, we’ll try, I thought, but our pictures will never look like THAT.
Geniia and I know each other for a long time.
We started walking and chatting and eventually taking pictures. People were looking at us. And I became shy.
She casually suggested a location change, away from people and I was so grateful. At some point she asked me if I wanted to look at the pictures just to get an idea of what we had shot so far.
I was shocked. I looked at the camera screen, at her, and back. I loved the pictures. Not just one good shot, all of them. They were so me. I recognised the face, the gestures, from looking at the mirror, but I had never seen myself like that. She captured who I am, and that was what I liked about these pictures. They were me.
It doesn’t matter if I am considered conventionally beautiful. It doesn’t matter if I other people think I am. It matters if look at myself and like what I see.
And these pictures made that so damn easy.
